Welcome to SRI SAKTHI ACADEMY SCHOOL

Sri Sakthi Academy, a School for Special Children, functioning in a spacious 6500 Sq.ft. building in a calm and peaceful area of Defence Officers Colony, Ekkattuthangal, Chennai, provides Special Education and Vocational Training for the Special Children.

Started in Feb 2009, with a handful of students, today we continue to grow and cater to the needs of nearly 75 students. Children with Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, ADHD, ADD, Down Syndrome and Autism are being taken special care of by the Institution.

The founder of the Academy, Mrs. Shiyamala Mohan, qualified in B.A.(psy.), B.Ed.(Spl.Ed.) has been working with Special Children for the past 25 years. Being a parent of a special child, she was instrumental to provide Special Education, Vocational guidance and training to the Special Children.

As part of her commitment to the betterment of the Society and to promote educational activities in an organized and perpetual manner, she has created “Sri Sakthi Charitable Trust” to provide education and create opportunities for development of functional, academic, personal, social, life survival, safety work related skills for individuals with special needs.

Finding strategies for working with special needs, students can be a challenge for all the special education teachers. Our School understands the problems they face and offers activities and education that will take them to an independent living.

The Tata group of Companies has been coming along with us in all ups and downs from the beginning to this day. Mr. Saradh Sir, GM, Titan Company Ltd. and Mr. C.K. Venkatraman Sir, MD, Titan Company Ltd. have been continuously helping us in all situations.

The Primary Section provides a number of activities that are specially geared towards teaching basic skills to the students. Our curriculum that includes communication skills, cognition development, conceptual learning, coordinating skills, physiotherapy, yoga, movement therapy etc. prepares the children for the challenges and opportunities both in and out of the class room.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are two crucial aspects of Rehabilitation services. Occupational Therapy helps a student achieve the maximum potential level of independence. Physiotherapy concentrates in restoring and strengthening functional tasks and other physical activities. Our Physiotherapist evaluates and develops a treatment plan to promote movements and increase functional activities for the needy. The primary activities are aimed to help to improve gross and fine motor abilities and in the course to enhance an understanding of life skills.

The students are then steered towards specific training in Computer, Front Office, Craftwork and other subjects that helps them to move forward and face the examinations.

The students who are capable and educable are then trained to appear for the X and XII Std. board examinations conducted by NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling). Practical oriented subjects are chosen for reducing their theoretical pressure. The School Leaving Certificates of NIOS uplift their social status and enables them to seek jobs or study further. Many students have completed their X and XII Stds. They are further offered training programmes in fundamentals of Computer Applications such as MS Office, Data Entry and Basic Internet operations. They also undergo training in Graphic Designing courses which include Photoshop, Illustrator and Coreldraw.

Sri Sakthi Community College, approved by Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) is exclusively for Special Children. The students who have completed their class X and XII Stds. can enroll in job oriented Vocational Diploma courses such as Diploma in Computer Applications, Diploma in Desk Top Publishing, Diploma in Multimedia System and Diploma in Catering Management.

Sri Sakthi Community College will make headlines for its pioneering education programme for Special Children. Tailored to the needs of students with special needs, providing them with supportive community and learning environment. Sensitive to their needs, Sri Sakthi Community College offers them a chance to earn a vocational degree with the guidance and support from TNOU.

Our Community College and School want to enable all children in line with their abilities to live full happy and independent lives so that they can contribute to the community, cooperate with other people and continue to learn.

Our aim is to create job opportunities for Special Children. The School’s goal is to open a full fledged Departmental Stores or a Catering Unit etc. which will provide the students with hand on training in salesmanship and money handling. Practical exposure to daily life situation and varied environment will make them confident and capable. Our education is about supporting these children to develop in all aspects of life – moral, cognitive, emotional, social, physical etc.
